The Art of iPhone-ography

There is no secret about it …
Obsessed some may say.
I am the girl that other girls don't bring cameras because they KNOW i've got it covered.
I'm the girl who found 4 undeveloped throw away cameras when cleaning out her room… hello church camp 05.

Although I LOVE my DSLR, Lola,
(yeah I name inanimate objects…ha)
I have my iPhone with me 100% of the time.
The moments in-between are normally captured on my phone.
(name still in the works)

I try really hard to take pretty pictures with my phone because well… I don't only want memories I want PRETTY memories.

Here is a list of my top 5 iPhone-ography Tips to improve your iPhone Pictures
(or any picture for that matter):

1. Lighting inside:
The best light, DSLR or Phone, is natural light.
Natural light will take the "yellow-organge" and grainy darkness out of the photos.
If at all possible use light colors as light reflectors, white/natural colored wall, wispy curtains etc.

Here is a picture of my bedroom in natural light.

The natural light makes the image sharper.

2. Lighting Outside
Just like in 1 John 1:7 we must get in the light. Both literally and figuratively.
Just moving a few inches or swapping sides with the camera can make a HUGE difference in the photo.

Here are two of the same pictures after a fun girls shopping trip.
In the first picture I was half way under the parking garage cover and it was casting all sort of funky shadows. In the second photo I just flipped sides with camera and "got into the light" and it made a MUCH better picture!

3. Play with angles, spacing and perspective.
This is the SINGLE most important thing if you want "artsy" shots.
getting WAY above your subject, on the same level as your subject or shooting your subject from below can change the scale of your picture and add ALL sorts of depth to your phone pictures!

Moving your subject from the center of your frame can add focal interest in the subject.

Clearly I favor the right side of the picture but the sucker, air plane and boy all are technically the subject of the photo but spacing them in the right third of the picture tells the complete story.
One of the most important things about shooting with your phone is perspective because you want to remember things the way that you saw them.

(1) I LOVE this picture, this is my FAVORITE Texas Music Artist Aaron Watson.
I may have clawed my way up to the VERY front of the stage and I REALLY wanted to remember being RIGHT there RIGHT in front of him singing my heart out.
(2)The chalk board was of my last day of student teaching and this is how I remember my time there standing at this board looking at it from this angle.
(3) 11.11.11 @ 11.11am my kids were taking a test, and I wanted to remember this moment. This moment that came once in a century.
The way that I took the picture DIRECTLY translated into my perspective and the way I wanted to remember that particular memory.
4. Filters
It is NO secret that I am OBSESSED with Instagram but my other love is Hipstamatic.

I love instagram because it takes a hot minute to edit pictures and make them all pretty, and I am ALL for quick and pretty :)
There are SO many great filters but I am honestly OBSESSED with Amaro and Rise… its just a little bump of AWESOMENESS.

Here is my other love hipstamatic.
Seriously so great. There are different, films, lenses and flashes that you can use to achieve different effect.

I documented my spring break trip last year and cherish every hispta picture I took.

Seriously there is nothing worse than dropping your phone in the cup holder with a cup of water still in the holder, loosing it at a crowded theatre, or accidentally deleting the picture you were trying to send… not that I speak from experience or anything.

With our phones we have the luxury of storing a lot of files on our device, BUT that still is not safe enough. Make sure that at least once a week you transfer your phone images to your computer. It will save you LOTS of time and heartache later if you make this a weekly task!

Do you have any tips to share? Any great Apps that you like?

so I just read one of your comments on another blog about how you've asked your students to take pictures of your outfit - that is really funny! Just thought I'd stop by and say thanks for making me smile this morning. : )

Oh my gosh, I love all the picture tips! I'm ALL about my iPhone camera now that I have the 4s and the camera is SO legit. I don't carry my digital with me anymore, and I (like you) am the girl who takes her camera everywhere so the other people don't. I will definitely be trying these ASAP.
